It took me a long time to choose just which pictures I wanted to post from this family photo session that I had with Nabila Ali of SanyaZ Photography, they were all so amazing. I feel so lucky to have my wonderful little family captured so beautifully.
When I first started dating my husband, we bonded over two things – our love of both the TV show Family Guy, and 90’s rock music. We also bonded over other less shallow stuff, but that is besides the point of this post. I still argue that the best music ever produced came from that time, but I may be biased because I was an angst-y teen at the time, and the music was full of raw emotion and darkness that really appealed to me back then.
I was so excited to get the new Smashing Pumpkins album Oceania, because I loved the band and I don’t understand why they (and other amazing bands from the era) weren’t making new music. What I especially miss are the themes that pervaded the lyrics like lost love, anger, and challenging the status quo – yes I was one of those kids that read and re-read the lyrics from the cd insert while the songs played on my disc man – remember those? Music has always had a profound effect on me, and my life was shaped by the direct influence of some of these bands. I mean come on – Hole, Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam, Sublime, Alice in Chains, Bush, Rage…I could go on and on.
Finding my true self as an American born of Pakistani immigrant parents was tough- because you can easily end up living two separate lives, one American, one Pakistani. Growing up I always challenged what I was taught, when it came to religion or rules. I was totally a rebel without a clue in jr. high and high school, in college I went the other way and became very spiritual.

It took years but I’ve found a balance that works for my life now. Looking back I am so glad I did challenge the status quo, because I just confirmed that everything I am doing is because I truly believe it, not because somebody told me to. So if you can learn from others mistakes, definitely do it (it’s easier), but if you are like me – experience everything life has to offer for yourself, and don’t regret a moment, it will all make sense in the future. I promise.
