Video: How To Start A Natural Skincare Routine + Art of Pure

This year I’m switching to a natural skincare routine – using products  that are both effective AND good for me.

A few weeks ago, Art of Pure held a pop-up shop at CH/LL Chicago, and I was so excited to attend. There were beauty products to play with, followed by my choice of meditation or yoga workshop – basically my ideal Saturday morning. I would also get the chance to meet boss babe, entrepreneur mama, and Art of Pure founder, Monika Joshi. But then life happened, and unfortunately I had to miss out. However, one of my resolutions this year is to be more proactive, so I decided to reach out to see if she would be willing to meet with me, and to my delight, she agreed!

Starting a natural skincare routine isn’t easy. There are lots of products marketed as ‘natural’ that aren’t really, and there are also ingredients that read like they could be toxic chemicals, when in fact that is just the scientific term being used for something natural.

Which is precisely why I was thrilled to meet with Joshi. Art of Pure is a one stop shop, a thoughtfully curated selection of high-performing natural skin care and beauty products. Natural products have come a long way. It used to be a trade off, you either used stuff that was good for you, or stuff that actually worked. Now the problem isn’t finding a natural skincare product, but deciphering the labels and choosing one.  Art of Pure can help narrow down that list for you.

In this video, I ask Monika to share some of her personal favorite skincare products, and also her advice for a day time and night time skincare routine. I even get personal and ask her advice for any aspiring entrepreneurs out there looking to quit their job and follow their passion like she did. (I’m obsessed with her answer to that question, btw.) After our meeting, I left with a few samples of most of the products we talk about, and I’ve already started using them and I really love them.

According to Monika, there isn’t only one ‘right’ way, but the most important thing about your skincare routine is to keep it up. To see results, it is important to have a ritual, and to stay consistent with it.

Day Time:

  1. Cleanse skin twice using an oil-based cleanser. Massage cleanser into skin, and remove with towel.
  2. Apply Serum
  3. Use Toner
  4. Moisturize (note: If serum is oil-based, you can skip this step unless you feel you need more moisture)

Night Time:

  1. Like Day Time, cleanse skin twice using an oil based cleanser, massaging into skin and wiping with towel. Try opting for a different cleanser for the second time.
  2. Apply Serum
  3. Use Toner
  4. Apply Oil blend
  5. Moisturize using a slightly heavier moisturizer or a balm into skin.

  • When aunties are way cooler than you...
Took my mom to see her childhood bestie (who happens to live here) and ate up all their stories about life in Pakistan before they had any kids - they were both full-time teachers, obsessed with makeup and fashion, and to my surprise - apparently very big on playing pranks on each other! They would put on a burqa and go knock on doors and scare their friends 😂 (I was like wait - are you still talking about my mom??) I’ll never judge an aunty again...
  • New Zealand. Tree of Life. Countless others...when are we going to acknowledge White Supremacy as what it actually is, TERRORISM. I directly blame Fox News and other major right wing media outlets for influencing these hateful (probably uneducated) people. When we demonize people to the level where they are inhuman (children in cages at the border) we open up the possibility to do the most evil without regard. I hesitated on posting this because I like to keep things light around here - but damn, I realize I really don’t have that privilege...ignoring the news isn’t something I can just do as a brown Muslim woman ~ my family is at the mosque every Friday praying - what I want to know is, what can we do to really make change?? Eff the NRA and all the corporations that benefit off of human suffering!
  • Don’t worry baby girl, what’s mine is yours! (Note the backward shoe in pic 3 😂) #playingdressup #momswithcameras
  • Drove mom all the way out to Devon for some Falooda and shopping - but baby Soph fell asleep and I know better than to mess with her nap time so...in the car I shall stay. #dontwakethebaby #likeever #faloodatogo
  • ‘And this one will make your skin baby soft...’
never too early to start learning proper skincare! (In reality she was trying to grab everything off of every shelf so I had to strap her in the stroller and have my mom take her outside so I could get what I needed 😂 - @anastasiabeverlyhills brow pencil, @theouai wave spray) #lesigh #momlife
  • Happy bday to my little man ~ cheers to 8 years! (And we are officially done with birthdays for the year hallelujah! 🙏🏾)
  • 15 year old Zahra would be so proud of this look ~ story time: I bought this necklace from a lady on the beach in Jamaica who was so sweet - she suggested I buy a toe ring anklet thing and I said my feet are way too ugly for that - she told me I was beautiful and sternly advised me never to say bad stuff about myself again - so I said Awww thank you! ok give me like three more shell necklaces 💁🏾‍♀️ The end.
  • DIY face mask: ingredient: Peanut butter (also yes this was a b* to clean up 😱) #momswithcameras
  • Spending some quality time with my mom this week! I’m pretty sure I got all of my best traits from her ❤️ even the ones that bother her the most...🤭 😊Also a peek at the living room progress - so far we have new paint and a new couch! Currently sourcing gold sconces, a console table for the record player, and wall art and accessories. I love shopping second-hand, vintage and artisan made, where are your favorite places to shop for home?? #internationalwomensday #mothersanddaughters
