Must Have: Cork Yoga Mats + The Samadhi Initiative

I’m so excited to finally share my latest discovery and current obsession, the cork yoga mat by The Samadhi Initiative. Read on to learn more about why I love my mat. If you are inclined to buy one, use my code ‘lovezahra’ for 15% off of your purchase!

First off, a little background, the Samadhi Initiative is a line of eco-friendly yoga mats and accessories, created by a passionate yoga teacher searching for better products to use and improve her own practice. The mats are completely customizable with your own personal mantra or favorite images that will enhance your practice. Whether you are a seasoned yogi or just getting started on your yoga journey, the Samadhi Initiative cork mat is a must-have. Especially for hot yoga, the non-slip grip of cork will be a huge improvement to traditional plastic mats, which any hot yoga practitioner knows can easily get dangerously slippery.

I’ve been using my mat for several weeks now and the biggest surprise to me was how comfortable and thick they are under my feet unlike some cork mats I’ve tried. I’m also surprised and a little embarrassed I’ve been using plastic mats so long even though I care a great deal about the environment. Unlike plastic PVC mats, cork does not have you breathing in toxins. It is also easy to clean and naturally repels dust, hair, and insects, so it is also better for people with allergies.

If all that weren’t enough, cork is also a completely natural renewable material produced from the bark of a tree, and is harvested in a way that does not harm the tree that produces it, allowing it to continue growing, flourishing and reproducing the bark after it is harvested. Cork trees do not require excessive amounts of resources either, making them eco-friendly. Also, water-based inks are used to personalize the mats.

What I really love about The Samadhi Initiative mats though, is that there is a place to personalize your mat with something truly meaningful to you, whether it is a design or a personal mantra. Growing up I was always praying on beautiful prayer rugs that were embroidered with geometric designs commonly found in Islamic art, or images of holy sites like Mecca. Having something to look at really helps me with my focus and concentration. For my mat, I chose to personalize with a beautiful flower and the word ‘presence’ for two reasons: 1 – I always want to remember to be present, to live in the moment and appreciate the blessings in my life instead of just going through the motions, and 2- I want to have presence, meaning the confidence to always own who I am, and always proudly live my truth.

  • When aunties are way cooler than you...
Took my mom to see her childhood bestie (who happens to live here) and ate up all their stories about life in Pakistan before they had any kids - they were both full-time teachers, obsessed with makeup and fashion, and to my surprise - apparently very big on playing pranks on each other! They would put on a burqa and go knock on doors and scare their friends 😂 (I was like wait - are you still talking about my mom??) I’ll never judge an aunty again...
  • New Zealand. Tree of Life. Countless others...when are we going to acknowledge White Supremacy as what it actually is, TERRORISM. I directly blame Fox News and other major right wing media outlets for influencing these hateful (probably uneducated) people. When we demonize people to the level where they are inhuman (children in cages at the border) we open up the possibility to do the most evil without regard. I hesitated on posting this because I like to keep things light around here - but damn, I realize I really don’t have that privilege...ignoring the news isn’t something I can just do as a brown Muslim woman ~ my family is at the mosque every Friday praying - what I want to know is, what can we do to really make change?? Eff the NRA and all the corporations that benefit off of human suffering!
  • Don’t worry baby girl, what’s mine is yours! (Note the backward shoe in pic 3 😂) #playingdressup #momswithcameras
  • Drove mom all the way out to Devon for some Falooda and shopping - but baby Soph fell asleep and I know better than to mess with her nap time so...in the car I shall stay. #dontwakethebaby #likeever #faloodatogo
  • ‘And this one will make your skin baby soft...’
never too early to start learning proper skincare! (In reality she was trying to grab everything off of every shelf so I had to strap her in the stroller and have my mom take her outside so I could get what I needed 😂 - @anastasiabeverlyhills brow pencil, @theouai wave spray) #lesigh #momlife
  • Happy bday to my little man ~ cheers to 8 years! (And we are officially done with birthdays for the year hallelujah! 🙏🏾)
  • 15 year old Zahra would be so proud of this look ~ story time: I bought this necklace from a lady on the beach in Jamaica who was so sweet - she suggested I buy a toe ring anklet thing and I said my feet are way too ugly for that - she told me I was beautiful and sternly advised me never to say bad stuff about myself again - so I said Awww thank you! ok give me like three more shell necklaces 💁🏾‍♀️ The end.
  • DIY face mask: ingredient: Peanut butter (also yes this was a b* to clean up 😱) #momswithcameras
  • Spending some quality time with my mom this week! I’m pretty sure I got all of my best traits from her ❤️ even the ones that bother her the most...🤭 😊Also a peek at the living room progress - so far we have new paint and a new couch! Currently sourcing gold sconces, a console table for the record player, and wall art and accessories.
