This week has been such a dream since temps have been hitting over 80 degrees consistently daily. I’m not sure if it is my Pakistani heritage, or the fact that I grew up in Sacramento, but I’m just made for hot weather. Not in the way that everyone likes pleasantly warm weather, I mean for me, the hotter it gets – the better. I become happier, nicer, and just a better human being in the heat.
When I was younger I’d get in trouble for being out in the sun so long because I get so tan and that was a bad thing in my culture where girls were prized to be ‘fair and lovely’ (*sigh* colorism for South Asians…a lasting effect of British Imperialism). I never subscribed to that line of thinking thanks to my American upbringing and gaggle of girlfriends who worshipped tanning, the same ones I’d always used to sneak out to the pool with – my chlorine bloodshot eyes and fresh tan giving me away every time. So bringing us back to today, with this heat wave in Chicago, of course I’ve been spending every moment outside possible.
Wearing white not only reflects heat and keeps you cool, which makes sense why it is pretty much a standard color for summer, but it also looks really great with a tan. I like to pair white with either more white, or with other neutral tones in lightweight fabrics, like this fringed sweater and my new favorite espadrille shoes. I plan on packing these for our Memorial Day weekend trip to the lake, ugh I’m so excited – only two days left before sun, boats, and barbecue!
